Winter Fire Update

July 21, 2002

10:00 AM

Firefighters worked all day Saturday to bolster the north end of the fire with retardant and water drops, while constructing dozer and hand lines.  Winds blowing to the south also helped keep fire away from the critical north line, although it caused the fire to cross the west line along the southern portion.  Crews were temporarily pulled back from the lines to ensure their safety.

The Winter Fire is now 31,100 acres, and is 40% contained.  Containment is expected by the end of day shift on July 25th.

Although 60 homes remain threatened by the fire, no evacuations are imminent – the head of the fire has moved past the homes in the area.  Many homes in the path of the fire have been saved from burning – none have been lost.  The possibility of strong down-drafts from Winter Rim pushing fire toward the homes continues to concern fire officials.

There have been no major injuries among the 816 firefighters on the Winter Fire.

Two hundred fifty National Guardsmen are expected to arrive in Paisley on Monday to help with containment and control of the Winter Fire.  Governor Kitzhaber is also expected to visit the fire area on Monday.

The Toolbox and Winter fires have burned together in a small area south of Picture Rock Pass.  This section of the fire is being managed as part of the Toolbox Complex, consisting of the 15,000-acre Silver Fire and the 40,000-acre Toolbox Fire.  Most of the 31,000- acre Winter Fire is separated from the Toolbox Complex and is being managed as a separate fire.

A unified team consisting of Fremont National Forest representatives, Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 2, and the Oregon Fire Marshal’s Red Fire Team is managing the firefighting effort on the Winter Fire.  An Area Command Team, stationed in Lakeview, is coordinating resource distribution and suppression strategy among the fires in the area.
