Whenever it boots, a directory windows opens. 04/13/02

Whenever it boots, a directory windows opens. How can he stop this?

This is a common problem in Windows, and it has several different solutions. It could be related to a program that runs at startup, so check your Startup folder.

Since there are so many possible solutions, we suggest going to Google's Groups search (http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=e) and searching for "Windows directory opens at boot." Look through the entries for possible solutions.

Want a faster dial up to your ISP? 02/16/02

Sometimes when you're calling into your Internet service provider on your dialup connection, just getting connected seems to take forever and a day. Decrease the time it takes for your dialup connection to make an actual connection by making these changes in Windows 98.

  • Open the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  • Right-click your ISP and select Properties.
  • Click the Server Types tab.
  • Record EVERY setting, just in case you need to go back to the way it was.
  • Under Advanced Options, uncheck the "Log on to network" box.
  • Check the box for "Enabled Software Compression."
  • Under Allowed Network Protocols, uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible.

What are the system requirements of Windows XP? 02/07/02

Thinking of upgrading to Windows XP from your Win 98 PC? For details about Microsoft's requirements for XP, visit Microsoft's site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/sysreqs.asp

I suggest taking Microsoft's hardware requirements and doubling the specs. For example, Microsoft suggests a 300 MHz processor; I say go with at least 500 MHz. The reason is that XP will run a lot smoother.

If you have a slower system than the requirements, then stick with an older OS.

Does too many fonts in a Windows 98 PC slow it down?. Will removing fonts make his system faster?

It sure will. Suggest you remove all you do not use. You can store them in a backup file on a floppie if you ever want to use them later.

How to create a Windows recovery floppy disk. 02/07/02

If you want to create a simple boot disk, here are some helpful articles:

  • Create a Windows Me boot disk: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00017.asp
  • Make a Windows 98 boot disk: http://www.mvps.org/winmac/bootdisk.html
  • Create a Windows 2000 boot disk: http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm#07

If you want to create a boot floppy that is specifically designed to replace everything on your PC, you'll need to take more elaborate measures. You'll need Norton Ghost, which will allow you to create a boot floppy: http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/

    Upgrade to WinXP? 01/04/02

Someone has Windows 98 operating system. He wants to know if he should upgrade to Windows XP? He uses his computer for image editing, Flash web animation, video editing, and is the only user.

If you can spare the cash, you can upgrade to XP and get a lot of new features. XP is more stable, secure and faster than Windows 98. But it's not a top priority to upgrade. You'll be fine with Windows 98.

Now if you had WinME I would say upgrade now!

Several Paisley folks have a Windows 98 PC. Every once in a while, they get an illegal task error message. How can they stop this from happening? 01/01/02

Actually, system crashes and error messages are common, especially with WinME but also Win98 (no one still has Win95 do they?) This is part of the normal operation of an operating system. The problem is that in Windows 98, when the system crashes, it takes down your whole system. With Windows XP, only the application crashes, not your whole system, so you can go on with your work.

Make sure you have all of the patches for your software. You can get the patches by visiting the websites of the vendors who make the software. This is for printers, scanners, etc. as well as softwear.

Both Rosvi and I have uploaded to WinXP and have been very happy. (Crossing my fingers) I have not had a crash in three weeks!
