Date of Start:  7/12/02                        Cause:  Lightning

Size:  86,794 acres  (Silver 24,250; Toolbox 62,544 (includes Winter Fire Portion of Toolbox Complex); and 1,350 for Lava Fire                                    Containment:  65 percent

Estimated Full Containment: 8/7/02

Resources: 7 helicopters, 92 engines, 48 dozers, and 42 water tenders

Personnel:  1,659                                 Cooperating Agencies:  Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, local fire departments and law enforcement agencies, and private contractors. 

Cost:  $10.3 million                               Road Closures:  Highway 31 is opened.

 

Fire activity was restricted to individual torching of trees within the fire perimeter.  A small spot fire on the southeast side of the Toolbox Fire was quickly contained by crews.  Resources will continue containment activities throughout the day and hold existing lines.  The structure protection plan remains in place.  Initial attack resources have been identified. 

 

There are airspace restrictions over the Toolbox and Winter Fires due to the large number of firefighting aircraft in the area.  Pilots should avoid areas where there is smoke and the terrain is charred.
